38th ANNUAL AUGUSTA FUTURITY ATTRACTS 597 ENTRIES FROM 20 STATES, CANADA AND ITALY

The 38th annual Augusta Futurity ended Saturday, Jan. 21, in James Brown Arena with CRAIG THOMPSON of Buffalo, Texas, winning his third Futurity Open title riding REYZURBETONTHISCAT to a score of 223.

The gelding is owned by Barnwell Ramsey of Huntersville, N.C.

NICK PILCHER of Springville, Ind., became the Reserve Champion riding LCS SILVER CAT, owned by Larry Cooper, to a score of 218.5.

In the same night, JARRETT CALLAHAN of McConnells, S.C., won the Futurity Non-Pro championship riding CALICO SPOTS to a score of 222.  The stallion is owned by Callahan and his wife, Shannon.

Becoming the Reserve Champion was JODY McGLOTHLIN of Perrin, Texas, riding SOMETHINGTOBELIEVEIN, owned by Brett and Jody McGlothlin, to a score of 220.5.

The largest cutting horse event east of the Mississippi River offered a total purse of $535,458 which includes $43,700 in Stallion Stakes Incentive money with the 597 entries coming from 20 states as well as Canada and Italy. Georgia had the most entries with 111 while Texas placed second with 106 and South Carolina placed third with 75.

During the eight day event, champions were crowned in eight main categories. There also was a winner of the Area 18 Youth Scholarships competition featuring 13 contestants from Georgia and South Carolina.

The Mercuria/NCHA Open and Non-Pro competition also returned to the Augusta show with the prize money and accumulated points attracting riders from Texas and other states.

Special events also added to the excitement and fun of the show including NCHA members only Non-Pro and Open cutting, Western theme vendors, a horse sale, the Stallion Stakes Incentive program and The Augusta Futurity’s second annual “Tuff Truck Family Fun Parade.”

The parade winding from The Hippodrome stalls area in North Augusta, S.C., to the James Brown Arena in downtown Augusta saw a large number of trucks including pickups, antiques, big rigs and also commercial and modified vehicles with trophies and cash prizes awarded in the various categories.
