31st ANNUAL AUGUSTA FUTURITY

ATTRACTS 418 ENTRIES

FROM 20 STATES

 AND ITALY, VENEZUELA

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The 31st annual Augusta Futurity ended Saturday, Jan. 30, in James Brown Arena with BRAD MITCHELL of  Thompson’s Station, Tenn., winning the top Futurity Open title riding CAT A REY to a score of 223.0 and earning $18,748.

The stallion is owned by Painted Springs Farm LLC also of  Thompson’s Station, Tenn.

In the same night, CHAD BUSHAW of Weatherford, Texas, captured the Futurity Non-Pro title riding TWISTING PLAYDOUGH to a score of 219.0 and earning $14,110.  The mare is owned by Bushaw.

The largest cutting horse event east of the Mississippi offered a total purse of $482,077 with contestants coming from 20 states as well as Italy and Venezuela.  The largest number of the 418 entries from a single state was 126 from Texas.

“I thought this probably was the best show we’ve ever had,” said Show Manager Pete May.  “We started an hour later at 9 a.m. each day, and that made the show more comfortable for the competitors, the vendors and our staff.  I think we did a much better job of putting on this show because we weren’t under as much stress.  This definitely was a friendlier show since we didn’t have so much demand on us for time. Everything went very smooth.”

During the nine-day show (Jan. 22-30), Augusta Futurity champions were crowned in seven main categories plus two other events:  the Area 18 Youth Scholarships competition featuring contestants from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia, and also the Champions Challenge featuring past Open and Non-Pro Augusta Futurity champions.

Especially notable was Brad Mitchell winning both the champion and reserve champion titles in the prestigious Futurity Open category.

Also the show recorded its first champion from South America with Luis De Armas of Caracas, Venezuela, winning the $100,000 Amateur 5-6 Year Old category.  He also placed third in the $100,000 Amateur 4-Year-Old category.
